Innovative Non-Slip Solution for Lendlease at Sydney Metro Martin Place

At Stellmann Non-Slip, we’re always ready to tackle unique challenges to improve safety in public spaces. Our recent project at Sydney Metro Martin Place, located at 1 Elizabeth Street, Sydney, an innovative non-slip solution was required. In collaboration with Lendlease, we provided a customised solution to meet high safety standards on a particularly challenging surface.

The Challenge

At 1 Elizabeth Street, pedestrians and cyclists can reach lower levels via a metal staircase with bike ramp. The stairs and ramp are made of metal which is powder-coated with Interpon. Although this creates a seamless and visually appealing finish, it did not meet the required P4 slip-rating conform AS 4586 and AS 4663-2013. Because this is a critical safety standard for public spaces, a solution had to be found. However, as it is difficult to achieving a durable, long-lasting bond to powder coated metals, this posed a challenge.

Working Together for a Solution

At Stellmann Non-Slip, we understand that every substrate has its quirks. By working closely with the Lendlease team, we installed a sample of our coating in-situ. After a successful application and adhesion check, we were able to provide our industry leading product warranty for strong adhesion and consistent slip resistance. Furthermore, our sample achieved the required P4 slip-rating in an independent slip test.

Our Approach: Customised Application

As a leading supplier of innovative non-slip coatings, Stellmann Non-Slip has an extensive network of certified installation partners. For this project, we selected Pressure and Steam to complete the installation. While our water-based, VOC-free coating is easy to apply by roller, it can also be spray applied. Because of the stair treads and ramps, an HVLP-spray application was selected as the best installation method. Besides a smooth finish, this also allowed for the application to be carried out swiftly.
