Anti-Slip Coating for Loading Docks

Warehouse and Logistics Managers: The Dock Is Where Your Serious Claims Start

Falls, trips and slips account for about 32,000 serious workers’ compensation claims a year in Australia, 21.8% of all serious claims (Safe Work Australia, Key WHS Statistics 2025), and loading docks concentrate the causes: water blown in at the door, oil residue, hydraulic drips and workers moving at pace. Stellmann’s anti-slip coating for loading docks is CSIRO-tested and certified to AS 4586 P5, the highest pedestrian class, for the zones where people walk: dock walkways, stairs and designated crossing points.

What is AS 4586?

AS 4586 is the Australian Standard slip test: the surface is tested wet and given a P rating from P0 to P5, and the higher the number, the more slip resistance it has.

Why Loading Docks Are a High-Risk Slip Zone

Docks Are Half Outdoors, Permanently Contaminated and Always Busy

Docks are half outdoors, permanently contaminated and always busy. Painted concrete and steel plates get slick with the first shower or spill.

WHS Investigation

A dock worker slips on an oil-contaminated walkway crossing to the stairwell, and the WHS investigation asks for slip-resistance documentation.

Rain Ingress

Rain blows across the dock apron and the pedestrian crossing zone becomes invisible-wet.

WHS Audit Failure

A logistics site fails a WHS audit because the old floor coating on pedestrian routes has worn through.

Insurance Premium

An insurer lifts premiums after repeated slip incidents in dock stairwells.

Every one of these is avoidable. Stellmann's coating reduces the slip risk and documents it, while keeping the pedestrian zones in operation.

TWO SCALES OF DOCK TREATMENT

Same Certified Coating. Matched to Your Site Size.

The same AS 4586-tested formula covers a small warehouse entrance and a large distribution centre. Pick the path that fits your operation.

How professional treatment works

Slip Safety Is A Process: Not A One-Time Fix

Dock conditions change: new contaminants, new traffic patterns, worn patches. Stellmann's four-step system keeps pace with the site.

1

Profile

Call or send an enquiry. We assess the dock first, mapping the pedestrian zones: walkways, stairs, crossings, and the contamination they face. Then we match the right Stellmann product, with P5 as the target class. On-site assessment and slip testing can be arranged for industrial sites

2

Treat

Certified installers work off-shift or between windows so receiving never stops. No acid, no etching, no grinding, and treated zones are cured and walk-ready in up to 12 hours*.

3

Verify

Each zone is certified to AS 4586 P5 at the time of treatment and testing, backed by the COMPLIANCE GUARANTEE* on professional jobs (terms and conditions apply).

4

Maintain

Maintenance guide tuned to dock cleaning regimes, plus a re-test schedule so the certificate still matches the floor at the next audit.

PEDESTRIAN ZONE SURFACES

Surfaces We Treat in Loading Dock Pedestrian Zones

Loading Docks mix materials, and each one slips differently. Stellmann's coating is tested and rated across all the common ones.

Vehicle and forklift lanes are excluded from scope. We treat and mark the pedestrian path so the boundary is clear. Tell us your full dock layout in your enquiry.

Stellmann vs acid etching or paint

Why Stellmann Instead of Acid Etching or Floor Paint

Acid etching is a common alternative that roughens a floor by eating into its surface with acid. It wears through in months under industrial foot traffic and does nothing once oil sits on it. Standard floor paint is often more slippery wet than bare concrete. Stellmann's dual-component polyurethane coating forms a long-term bond with certified P5 grip in the zones that matter. The same CSIRO-tested system has been used across 1,924 commercial projects since 2019, including industrial facilities like Caterpillar.

Acid Etching & Floor Paint

Acid etching wears through in months under industrial foot traffic
Does nothing once oil sits on the surface
Standard floor paint can be more slippery wet than bare concrete
No certified P-rating documentation for WHS audits
Frequent retreatment cycles and associated downtime

Stellmann Coating

Long-term bond with certified P5 grip under contamination
Maintains grip under water, dust and oil residue with prompt cleaning
Clear pedestrian zone scope: vehicle lanes excluded and marked
P5 certificate per zone for auditors, insurers and incident files

Why it works for loading docks

WHS-Ready Grip for the Zones That Need It Most.

P5 pedestrian class

The highest AS 4586 pedestrian rating for the zones where dock workers are most exposed.

Holds under contamination

Maintains grip under water, dust and oil residue docks collect, with prompt spill cleaning per the guide.

Clear scope

Pedestrian walkways, stairs and crossings. Vehicle lanes excluded and marked so expectations match reality.

Off-shift application

Staged around receiving windows. No lost operational time.

WHS-ready paperwork

Per-zone certificates for auditors, insurers and incident response.

Loading Dock Compliance at a Glance

Compliance is documented at the time of treatment and testing. We recommend periodic re-testing to keep records current.

AS 4586 P5 Pedestrian Zones

Dock walkways, stairs and crossing points warrant the highest pedestrian slip class. Note: this covers foot-traffic zones, not vehicle or forklift lanes.

Work Health and Safety

Operators must maintain safe walking surfaces. Slips, trips and falls remain among the leading causes of serious claims (Safe Work Australia, 2025).

Contamination Resistance

Dock coatings must keep their rating under oil, hydraulic fluid and water, with spills cleaned promptly.

Workers Compensation

Documented slip prevention strengthens the employer's position after an incident and supports premium negotiations.

Questions, answered

Loading Dock Coating FAQs

Does oil contamination defeat the grip?

The coating holds its rating under the incidental oil residue and moisture docks collect. A standing spill still needs prompt cleaning; no walking surface is safe under pooled oil. The maintenance guide covers spill response.

Can you treat the dock without stopping receiving?

Yes. Zones are treated in stages, off-shift or between receiving windows, and are cured and walk-ready in up to 12 hours. Most docks never stop operating.

What rating do dock pedestrian zones need?

P5, the highest AS 4586 pedestrian class, is the appropriate target for dock walkways, stairs and crossings. Your free product match documents the rating per zone.

What paperwork do we get for WHS?

A P-rating certificate per treated zone, valid at the time of treatment and testing, plus a maintenance and re-test schedule. That is the documentation an audit or incident investigation asks for first.

Does the coating change how a gloss tile looks?

On a gloss tile the sheen can change slightly toward satin; that is the only visible difference most customers notice.
