Anti-Slip Coating for Showers

The Most Slippery Square Metre in the House

Homeowners, carers and facility managers: the shower is soap, water and bare feet on a smooth base, every day. Stellmann’s non-slip coating for showers is CSIRO-tested and certified to AS 4586 P3 for wet barefoot areas, and it is formulated to be safe on acrylic and fibreglass bases that acid treatments destroy. Nearly invisible, safe for skin contact, and applied without changing how the shower looks or drains.

What sets Stellmann apart: an acrylic-safe formulation. Most shower bases in Australian homes are acrylic or fibreglass, and most alternatives cannot touch them.

Trusted in the highest-risk wet barefoot surface in any building: Homes, Aged Care, Hospitals, NDIS & Gyms

What is AS 4586?

AS 4586 is the Australian Standard slip test: the surface is tested wet and given a P rating from P0 to P5, and the higher the number, the more slip resistance it has.

Why Showers Are the Highest-Risk Slip Surface

Wet, Barefoot and Enclosed: Every Shower Has the Same Three Risk Factors

Older Australians are hospitalised for falls 12 times more often than adults aged 25 to 44, and same-level slips are the most common cause (AIHW, Injury in Australia 2024-25). A smooth, soapy shower base is the textbook version of that slip.

Home

A family wants Mum to keep showering independently without a rail-and-mat obstacle course.

Gym

A gym’s communal showers produce a member injury claim after a slip.

Acrylic Base

A homeowner’s acrylic shower base has become dangerously slick, and acid etching would wreck it.

Hospital

A hospital needs shower recesses that meet slip and infection-control requirements at the same time: rough textures that trap bacteria are not an option.

Every one of these is avoidable. Stellmann's coating reduces the slip risk and documents it, while keeping the shower looking exactly as it does now.

TWO WAYS TO TREAT YOUR SHOWER

Home Showers in Under an Hour. Commercial Showers Professionally Certified.

Individual home showers are a simple DIY job: the 1.2 m² kit treats a standard shower base in under an hour. Aged care, healthcare facilities, gyms and strata shower blocks require professional installation with documented P3 certification.

HOME SHOWERS

DIY: P3 for Your Home Shower

One shower recess is an afternoon job with the 1.2 m² kit. No trades, no re-tiling. The same CSIRO-tested coating, cured and walk-ready in a day.

How it works

Safe Shower in Under an Hour, or Certified Overnight for Commercial Facilities

The process is the same whether you are treating one shower at home or a bank of showers in a commercial facility.

1

Profile

Call or send an enquiry. We assess the shower first: the base material and who uses it. Then we match the right Stellmann product, with P3 wet barefoot as the target. For communal and healthcare showers, an on-site assessment can be arranged, and higher-rated communal wet areas are covered on our wet areas and amenities page.

2

Treat

Certified installers coat the recess, or DIYers apply the 1.2m² shower kit in an afternoon. No acid, no etching, no grinding, and grout lines and drainage are unaffected.

3

Verify

Treated recesses are certified to AS 4586 P3 at the time of treatment and testing. Professional jobs carry the FEEL-THE-GRIP GUARANTEE* (terms and conditions apply).

4

Maintain

Maintenance guide included: the right cleaners keep the grip and the warranty intact.

Stellmann vs acid etching or shower mats

Why Stellmann Instead of Acid Etching or Shower Mats

Acid etching is a common alternative that roughens a floor by eating into its surface with acid. It destroys acrylic and fibreglass and dulls tile glaze, then wears off within 6 to 12 months. Rubber mats harbour mould and move underfoot. Stellmann’s dual-component polyurethane coating forms a long-term bond with the base: certified P3 grip, no damage, nothing extra to clean around. The same CSIRO-tested system is used across our 1,924 Commercial Projects since 2019, including healthcare.

Acid Etching & Shower Mats

Acid etching permanently damages acrylic and fibreglass bases
Rough etched texture traps soap scum and bacteria
Shower mats harbour mould and bacteria underneath
Mats lift at the edges; the exposure is where people step around them
Neither provides a certified P3 documentation

Stellmann Coating

Safe on acrylic and fibreglass: no chemical attack on the surface
Fine, even micro-texture: infection-control and easy-clean safe
Invisible: no change to the shower's appearance
Certified P3 wet barefoot for professional jobs

Safe, Clean, Invisible. For Every Shower Surface.

P3 wet barefoot rating

The AS 4586 class for shower recesses and bases, documented per recess.

Acrylic and fibreglass safe

Formulated for the bases acid treatments destroy.

Hygienic by design

Fine, even micro-texture, no ridges or tape edges to trap soap scum and bacteria.

Nearly invisible

No change to appearance, grout lines or drainage.

Fast

Applied in an afternoon and cured in up to 12 hours.

Shower Safety Compliance at a Glance

Compliance is documented at the time of treatment and testing. We recommend periodic re-testing for facilities.

AS 4586 P3 Wet Barefoot

Shower recesses and bases should meet P3 minimum. Communal and aquatic showers warrant higher ratings, covered on the wet areas page.

Healthcare Facility Standards

Hospital and care-facility showers must satisfy slip resistance and infection control together. Smooth certified coatings do both; rough textures fail the second test.

NDIS Home Modification

Walk-in shower conversions and shower safety works are common NDIS modifications. We supply the slip-resistance documentation for funding applications.

Aged Care Quality Standards

Documented slip prevention in resident bathrooms and showers supports accreditation.

Questions, answered

Shower Coating FAQs

Is it safe on an acrylic or fibreglass shower base?

Yes. The formulation is specifically safe for acrylic and fibreglass, which is the main reason to choose a coating over acid etching. Acid will permanently damage those bases.

Will it change how my shower looks or drains?

No. The coating is nearly invisible and does not fill grout lines or alter falls to the drain. The shower looks the same, it just grips underfoot.

Can I do it myself?

Yes. The 1m² shower kit is roller-applied and designed for a DIY afternoon. For communal, healthcare or compliance-documented showers, use the professional service so the recess is certified and covered by the FEEL-THE-GRIP GUARANTEE* (terms and conditions apply).

What rating does a shower need?

P3 wet barefoot under AS 4586 for residential and standard commercial showers. Communal aquatic showers and constantly wet amenities warrant higher ratings; see the wet areas and amenities page.

How long before the shower can be used?

The coating is applied the same day and needs up to 12 hours to cure, so a shower treated in the morning is typically back in service that night. Exact cure time is on the product instructions and your free product match.

Will it change the look of a gloss tile?

On a gloss tile the sheen can change slightly toward satin; that is the only visible difference most customers notice.
