AS 4586 P3 Interior / P4 Exterior
Indoor stairs need P3 minimum, outdoor stairs P4, in line with Building Code expectations for new and upgraded stairs.
Anti-Slip Coating for Stairs
A slip on a flat floor is a bruise, a slip on stairs is a hospital visit. Stellmann's coating is CSIRO-tested and certified to AS 4586: P3 indoor, P4 outdoor.

Matched to where the stair is: interior or exposed to rain
Direct tread treatment: no edges to lift or cause trips
P3 indoor · P4 outdoor
Certified to AS 4586 at the time of treatment
AS 4586 is the Australian Standard slip test: the surface is tested wet and given a P rating from P0 to P5, and the higher the number, the more slip resistance it has.
Why Stairs Are the Highest-Risk Surface in Most Buildings
On stairs, only a small strip of each tread carries your weight, so any loss of grip is magnified. Add rain on external stairs, polished timber indoors, or worn grip tape, and a fall is a matter of time.
A strata resident trips on lifting grip tape in a communal stairwell. The tape meant to prevent an incident has caused one.
An employee falls on a wet external staircase and the WHS investigation asks for slip-resistance documentation the building does not have.
An aged care home needs its polished timber stairs treated without changing how they look.
A school needs P3 interior and P4 exterior stair compliance across the whole campus, documented for its auditors.
Every one of these is avoidable. Stellmann's coating reduces the slip risk and documents it, without grip tape, abrasive strips or a new trip hazard.
How professional treatment works
No grip tape, no new trip hazard. The tread surface is treated directly and certified per flight.
Call or send an enquiry. We assess the staircase first: tread material, indoor or outdoor exposure and traffic level. Then we match the right Stellmann product and recommend P3 or P4 accordingly. On-site assessment and slip testing can be arranged for commercial and facility projects.
Certified installers coat treads, landings and nosings. No acid, no etching, no grinding. Staircases are typically treated in sections so the building keeps moving, and treated steps are cured and walk-ready in up to 12 hours.
Each treated flight is certified to its AS 4586 P-rating at the time of treatment and testing, backed by the FEEL-THE-GRIP GUARANTEE* on professional jobs (terms and conditions apply).
You get a maintenance guide and re-test schedule so the grip you paid for is still there next audit.
MULTI-SURFACE COMPATIBLE

Why it works for stairs
The ratings the Building Code expects for stairs, documented per flight.
Nothing to peel, lift, discolour or trip on. The tread keeps its original look.
One system for timber, tile, concrete, stone and metal stairs.
Treat one flight at a time so stairwells stay usable.
P-rating certificate for each treated area, valid at the time of treatment and testing.
Compliance is documented at the time of treatment and testing. We recommend periodic re-testing to keep records current.
Indoor stairs need P3 minimum, outdoor stairs P4, in line with Building Code expectations for new and upgraded stairs.
Sets slip-resistance requirements for stair treads and nosings in commercial and public buildings. Non-compliance can hold up certification.
Communal stairs are common property. The owners corporation is responsible for keeping them safe and showing how.
Falls, trips and slips account for about 32,000 serious workers’ compensation claims a year, 21.8% of all serious claims (Safe Work Australia, Key WHS Statistics 2025). Documented stair treatment is part of a defensible WHS position.
Recommended Products for Stairs
Match the product to the stair location. Mixed buildings with interior and exterior stairwells can use both in the same project.
Success Stories
Stellmann delivered certified anti-slip stair treatment at Translink busway stations across South East Queensland: high-traffic external concrete stairs, P4 certified, with documented AS 4586 records.
Success Stories
At Dymocks Sydney, Stellmann treated the heritage tile stairs and floor landings, a project where preserving the building's appearance was as critical as the safety outcome. Treads and landings were certified to AS 4586 P3, with no change to the tile finish and full compliance documentation supplied to building management.
WHY FAMILIES TRUST STELLMANN
Questions, answered
No. Compliance is about the measured slip resistance of the walking surface. A certified P3 or P4 coating on the tread meets the requirement without tape. Where extra edge visibility is needed, coloured nosing coatings can be added.
No. The finish is nearly invisible. Timber stays timber, tile stays tile. That is why aged care homes and heritage buildings use it.
P3 for interior stairs and P4 for exterior stairs under AS 4586, consistent with Building Code expectations. We confirm the right rating for your staircase as part of your free product match.
Yes. Flights are treated in stages, often after hours, and treated steps are cured and walk-ready in up to 12 hours. Most staircases are done within a day.
Years, not months, when maintained as specified. Stairs concentrate wear on the tread edge, so every job includes a maintenance guide and re-test schedule.
On a gloss tile the sheen can change slightly toward satin; that is the only visible difference most customers notice.
More than 16,500 Australians were hospitalised by stair falls last year. Yours do not need to be one of them. Call 1300 987 095 or send an enquiry for a free product match by surface.
