Trusted in the places a slip costs the most: Homes, Venues, Aged Care & Pool Facilities

What is AS 4586?

AS 4586 is the Australian Standard slip test: the surface is tested wet and given a P rating from P0 to P5, and the higher the number, the more slip resistance it has.

Why Decks Are a High-Risk Slip Zone

Timber Loses Grip as It Weathers

The surface polishes underfoot, algae fills the grain in shaded spots, and deck oils can make the boards more slippery when wet, not less.

Homeowner

A guest at a backyard BBQ slips on rain-wet boards and the homeowner is suddenly reading their liability cover.

Venue

A resort boardwalk's old rigid coating has cracked and peeled, adding a trip hazard to the slip hazard.

Maintenance

A freshly oiled deck turns out to be slicker than before the maintenance.

Aged Care

An aged care facility’s outdoor deck becomes hazardous each autumn under leaf litter and moisture.

Every one of these is avoidable. Stellmann's coating reduces the slip risk and documents it, while keeping the timber looking like timber.

How professional treatment works

Slip Safety Is A Process: Not A One-Time Fix

Timber moves, weathers and picks up treatments over the years. Stellmann's system follows four documented steps matched to what is on the boards.

1

Profile

Call or send an enquiry. We assess the deck first: timber or composite, its condition and any existing oils or stains, which affect preparation. Then we match the right Stellmann product to it. On-site assessment can be arranged for venues and facilities.

2

Treat

Certified installers prepare and coat the boards, or DIYers roll on a kit over a weekend. No acid etching (a process that roughens boards by eating into them with acid), no grinding. Cured in up to 12 hours*.

3

Verify

Treated decks are certified to AS 4586 P4 at the time of treatment and testing. Professional jobs carry the FEEL-THE-GRIP GUARANTEE* (terms and conditions apply).

4

Maintain

Maintenance guide covering cleaning and seasonal algae, plus re-coat and re-test guidance, because timber moves and weathers by nature.

MULTI-SURFACE COMPATIBLE

Surfaces We Treat on Decks

Decks mix materials, and each one slips differently. Stellmann's coating is tested and rated across all the common ones.

Stellmann vs deck oil, paint or grip strips

Why Stellmann Instead of Deck Oil, Paint or Grip Strips

Deck oil protects the timber but can reduce wet grip. Textured deck paints hide the grain and peel as boards move. Screwed-on grip strips announce themselves visually and collect grime at the edges. Stellmann adds certified P4 grip while showing the timber underneath, with preparation matched to the boards' condition. The same CSIRO-tested system backs 1,924 commercial projects since 2019.

Stellmann Coating

Nearly invisible: the deck reads as timber, not as painted plywood

Why it works for decks

Safer Decks. Same Timber Underneath.

P4 outdoor rating

Certified wet grip for exposed decking, documented per area.

Grain stays visible

Nearly invisible finish. The deck reads as timber, not as painted plywood.

UV-resistant

Formulated for Australian sun, so grip does not disappear after one summer.

Barefoot-friendly

Fine micro-texture that grips wet feet without shredding them, suited to barefoot areas.

DIY or done for you

Roll-on kits for home decks, certified professional service for venues and facilities.

Deck Compliance at a Glance

Compliance is documented at the time of treatment and testing. We recommend periodic re-testing as part of deck maintenance.

AS 4586 P4 Outdoor

Outdoor decks and boardwalks should meet P4, with re-testing recommended as timber weathers.

Hospitality Duty of Care

Venues with deck areas owe guests safe surfaces, documented. Boardwalks and pool decks are the classic exposure.

Timber Compatibility

Deck treatments must cope with timber movement and existing oils or stains. Preparation is matched to the boards during profiling.

Aged Care Outdoor Areas

Facility decks must stay safely usable year-round, documented for accreditation.

Questions, answered

Deck Coating FAQs

Can you coat over deck oil or stain?

It depends on what is on the boards and how recently it was applied. Tell us in your enquiry; preparation is matched to the deck’s condition, and some oiled decks need a clean-back before coating. That is part of the free plan.

Will I still see the timber grain?

Yes. The finish is nearly invisible. Grain and colour stay visible, the boards just grip when wet.

Does it work on composite decking?

Yes. Composite boards weather differently to hardwood but take the coating well. Mention the brand and age in your enquiry.

Is it OK barefoot?

Yes. The micro-texture is designed for wet bare feet, which is why the same system is used around commercial and amenity decks.

How long does it last on a deck?

Years when maintained as specified. Timber moves and weathers, so the maintenance guide includes seasonal cleaning and re-coat guidance.

Does the coating change how a gloss tile looks?

On a gloss tile the sheen can change slightly toward satin; that is the only visible difference most customers notice.

Keep the Deck. Lose the Slip.
