What is AS 4586?

AS 4586 is the Australian Standard slip test: the surface is tested wet and given a P rating from P0 to P5, and the higher the number, the more slip resistance it has.

Stellmann vs acid etching or floor paint

Why Stellmann Instead of Acid Etching or Grip Paint on Ramps

Acid etching is a common alternative that roughens a floor by eating into its surface with acid. It cannot deliver different ratings for different gradients, damages the surface, and typically wears off within 6 to 12 months, faster under industrial traffic. Stellmann’s dual-component polyurethane coating forms a long-term bond and is certified per ramp at the class the slope requires. It is the same CSIRO-tested system used across 1,924 commercial projects since 2019, including industrial facilities.

Ramp Coating FAQs

What P-rating does my ramp need?

It depends on the gradient. Standard grades typically need P4 and steeper inclines P5 under AS 4586 with HB 198 guidance. Send the slope details with your enquiry and your free product match will specify the rating per ramp.

Can vehicles drive on it?

The coating is specified for pedestrian zones: walkways, dock stairs, crossing points and foot-traffic ramps. It is not a vehicle-lane product. For mixed ramps we treat the pedestrian path and mark the separation.

Does oil kill the grip?

The coating maintains its rating under the incidental water, dust and oil residue ramps collect, but no surface is immune to a standing spill. Clean spills promptly; the maintenance guide covers this.

Can you treat ramps without stopping operations?

Yes. Ramps are treated in stages, usually off-shift or overnight, and are cured and walk-ready in up to 12 hours. Most sites never stop receiving.

What about our wheelchair access ramps?

They have their own requirements under the DDA and NDIS. See the dedicated wheelchair ramp coating page, or mention accessibility ramps in your enquiry and we will plan both together.

Does the coating change how a gloss tile looks?

On a gloss tile the sheen can change slightly toward satin; that is the only visible difference most customers notice.
