AS 4586 P4 Outdoor
Outdoor pedestrian paths should meet P4 slip resistance, with regular re-testing on high-traffic routes.
Anti-Slip Coating for Walkways
Public and commercial walkways mix materials, weather and volume: rain-wet concrete, mossy pavers, worn timber boardwalks, thousands of footsteps a day. Stellmann’s anti-slip coating for walkways is CSIRO-tested and certified to AS 4586 P4 for outdoor pedestrian areas, and one system covers concrete, pavers, stone and timber, so you do not need a different contractor for every surface on the route.

CSIRO-tested to AS 4586: the correct rating for outdoor walkways
Concrete, stone, timber and tile: one P4 certified treatment
No extended walkway closure: open for normal use by morning*
P4 outdoor
Certified to AS 4586 at the time of treatment
AS 4586 is the Australian Standard slip test: the surface is tested wet and given a P rating from P0 to P5, and the higher the number, the more slip resistance it has.
Why Walkways Are a High-Risk Slip Zone
Outdoor paths face rain, irrigation overspray, algae and leaf litter, then funnel every pedestrian on site across them. Falls, trips and slips already account for about 32,000 serious workers’ compensation claims a year in Australia, 21.8% of all serious claims (Safe Work Australia, Key WHS Statistics 2025), and public walkways carry the same physics with public liability attached.
A shopping centre’s outdoor walkway turns slick in rain and centre management wants documented P4 grip before the next claim, not after it.
A council path grows algae each winter and an elderly resident falls on a morning walk.
A resort boardwalk’s old coating has cracked and peeled, creating a trip hazard on top of the slip hazard.
A university needs one treatment across concrete, pavers and timber instead of three contractors and three warranties.
Every one of these is avoidable. Stellmann's coating reduces the slip risk and documents it, while keeping the walkway open and looking the same.
How professional treatment works
The process works whether you are treating one problem section or a 500-metre campus walkway network.
Call or send an enquiry. We assess the route first: the surfaces along it, the exposure and the traffic. Then we match products and ratings section by section, typically P4 outdoors. On-site assessment and slip testing can be arranged for council and commercial projects.
Certified installers coat the route in stages so pedestrian flow is maintained. No acid, no etching, no grinding, and treated sections are cured and walk-ready in up to 12 hours.
Treated sections are certified to their AS 4586 P-rating at the time of treatment and testing, backed by the COMPLIANCE GUARANTEE* on professional jobs (terms and conditions apply).
Maintenance guide and re-test schedule, so grip survives algae season and your records survive an audit.
MULTI-SURFACE COMPATIBLE
Walkways mix materials, and each one slips differently. Stellmann's coating is tested and rated across all the common ones.
Council footpaths, commercial walkways, transit corridors and campus paths.
Sandstone and bluestone paving, courtyard paths and heritage site walkways.
Hardwood and composite timber boardwalks, resort walkways and elevated paths.
Porcelain and stone outdoor tiles on shopping centre and campus walkways.
Why it works for walkways
Certified pedestrian grip for exposed paths, documented per section.
Concrete, pavers, stone, timber and tile treated under one job and one certificate set.
Formulated for Australian conditions, including algae-prone shaded paths.
Routes stay open while sections cure. Cured and walk-ready in a day.
P-rating certificates per treated section, valid at the time of treatment and testing.
Compliance is documented at the time of treatment and testing. We recommend periodic re-testing to keep records current.
Outdoor pedestrian paths should meet P4 slip resistance, with regular re-testing on high-traffic routes.
Councils and land managers are responsible for safe pathways. Documented slip resistance is the strongest position against negligence claims.
Where walkways serve workplaces, WHS duties apply. Slips, trips and falls remain a leading cause of serious claims (Safe Work Australia, 2025).
Outdoor coatings must hold their rating through rain, sun and organic growth, not just on installation day.
Recommended Product for Walkways
One P4 kit covers 15 m² across any mix of outdoor walkway surfaces. Larger networks: book a professional assessment for full route mapping and certification.
Success Stories
Stellmann delivered certified P4 walkway treatment across Translink busway stations in South East Queensland: mixed concrete and tile external walkways, certified per section, with full AS 4586 documentation.
Success Stories
Post Office Square is a high-footfall public space in Brisbane's CBD where wet pavers create real slip risk for the thousands of pedestrians passing through each day. Stellmann treated the outdoor circulation areas to P4 certification, with full AS 4586 documentation and no extended closure; areas were cured and walk-ready in up to 12 hours of treatment.
MEASURED, NOT PROMISED
Independent wet pendulum slip resistance reports, issued by NATA/ISO 17025-accredited laboratories, tested after treatment. Site names are shown generically until the client clears them for public use.

Wet pendulum results recorded after treatment by independent laboratories, to AS 4586/AS 4663. Site details genericised for confidentiality. A slip test records what a surface achieved on the day it was tested; results do not predict future slip risk. Full reports available on request.
Questions, answered
Yes. The coating is tested across all common walkway materials, so a mixed-surface route is treated as one job with one set of certificates. That is the point of it.
The formulation is UV-resistant and made for exposed paths. Like any outdoor surface it needs periodic cleaning and re-testing, which the included maintenance guide covers.
P4 under AS 4586 for outdoor pedestrian areas. High-risk sections such as ramps on the route may call for P5. We confirm ratings section by section in your free product match.
Yes. Routes are treated in stages, usually overnight or off-peak, and each section gets its own compliance certificate. Public transport and council projects are already on our books.
Years, not months, when maintained as specified. Traffic volume and shade (algae) are the main variables, so the re-test schedule matters.
On a gloss tile the sheen can change slightly toward satin; that is the only visible difference most customers notice.
One documented treatment beats one undocumented incident. Call 1300 987 095 or send an enquiry for a free product match by surface across every surface on your walkway.
