Anti-Slip Coating for Wheelchair Ramps

Accessible Means Safe in the Wet Too

NDIS participants, OTs, access consultants and facility managers: a wheelchair ramp that grips when dry but slides when wet is not accessible, it is a hazard with a handrail. Stellmann’s anti-slip coating for wheelchair ramps is CSIRO-tested and certified to AS 4586, with the P-rating matched to your ramp’s gradient: P4 for standard grades, P5 for steeper ramps. That gradient matching is what accessibility audits and NDIS funding applications look for.

What is AS 4586?

AS 4586 is the Australian Standard slip test: the surface is tested wet and given a P rating from P0 to P5, and the higher the number, the more slip resistance it has.

Why Wheelchair Ramps Are a High-Risk Slip Zone

DDA Gradient Is Not Enough: The Surface Still Needs Grip for Wheels, Feet and Carers

A ramp adds gravity to every other slip factor. Wheels lose traction, carers lose footing, and water runs down the slope instead of draining off it.

NDIS Participant

A wheelchair user cannot safely use a public building’s access ramp in rain, and the building receives a formal accessibility complaint.

NDIS Home Modification

An NDIS participant’s home ramp needs documented slip resistance before the modification can be funded.

Aged Care

An aged care facility’s ramp fails an accessibility audit because the old surface treatment has worn smooth.

Healthcare Clinic

A clinic’s entry ramp becomes slippery in wet weather and a carer is injured steadying a chair.

Every one of these is avoidable. Stellmann's coating reduces the slip risk and documents it, while keeping the surface smooth for wheels and safe for feet.

TWO WAYS TO TREAT YOUR WHEELCHAIR RAMP

Home NDIS Ramp or Commercial Access Ramp: Same Certified System.

Home ramps for NDIS participants can use the DIY kit and may be eligible for NDIS home modification funding. Commercial, healthcare and council access ramps require certified professional installation with documented P-rating for access and compliance records.

How professional treatment works

Assess the Gradient. Certify the Ramp. Document for Access Records.

The process accounts for gradient, surface type and the access compliance context: NDIS, DDA or WHS.

1

Profile

Call or send an enquiry. We assess the ramp first: gradient, surface and exposure. Then we match the right Stellmann product and set the target rating: P4 for standard grades, P5 for steeper ramps, in line with AS 4586 and the HB 198 guidance that maps locations to P-ratings. On-site assessment and slip testing can be arranged for facility and public-building projects.

2

Treat

Certified installers coat the ramp and landings. No acid, no etching, no grinding. Most ramps are coated in a day; allow up to 12 hours for the coating to cure.

3

Verify

The ramp is certified to its AS 4586 P-rating at the time of treatment and testing, with the certificate written against the ramp’s gradient. Professional jobs carry the COMPLIANCE GUARANTEE* (terms and conditions apply).

4

Maintain

Maintenance guide plus re-test schedule, so the access your certificate promises is still there next audit.

WHEELCHAIR RAMP SURFACES

Wheelchair Ramp Surfaces We Treat

Wheelchair mix materials, and each one slips differently. Stellmann's coating is tested and rated across all the common ones.

For general commercial and loading ramps (not wheelchair access), see the ramps page.

Stellmann vs acid etching or grip strips

Why Stellmann Instead of Grip Strips or Acid Etching on Wheelchair Ramps

Acid etching is a common alternative that roughens a floor by eating into its surface with acid. It cannot be tuned to a gradient and wears off within 6 to 12 months outdoors. Grip strips create ridges that catch castor wheels and walking frames. Stellmann’s dual-component polyurethane coating gives the whole ramp surface a certified, gradient-matched rating with a smooth, even texture that works for wheels, sticks and feet alike. The same CSIRO-tested system is trusted across 1,924 commercial projects since 2019, including healthcare environments.

Grip Strips & Acid Etching

Grip strips create ridges that catch castor wheels
A strip that protects ambulant users may destabilise a wheelchair
Acid etching wears quickly under wheelchair wheel traffic
Neither provides AS 4586 P-rating documentation for DDA/NDIS records

Stellmann Coating

Fine, even micro-texture: no ridges to catch castor wheels
Grip for feet and carers without destabilising wheelchair users
Gradient-matched P4 or P5: documented for DDA and NDIS records
No new hazard at the edge of a strip: the whole ramp surface is treated

Why it works for wheelchair ramps

Safe for Wheels. Safe for Feet. Documented for Access Records.

Gradient-matched P4/P5

The rating is set by the slope, which is exactly what DDA-related audits and NDIS applications check.

Funding-ready documentation

Slip-resistance certificates written for OTs, planners and access consultants.

Grip for wheels and feet

Micro-textured finish that helps chairs track and carers keep footing, without a rough surface that catches castors.

Up to 12 hours cure

Most residential ramps are coated in a day and usable after 12 hours.

No surface damage

Applied over concrete, metal or timber without etching or grinding.

Wheelchair Ramp Compliance at a Glance

Compliance is documented at the time of treatment and testing. We recommend periodic re-testing to keep records current.

Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)

Public buildings must provide safe, usable wheelchair access. A ramp that is unsafe when wet undermines that duty.

AS 4586 with HB 198 Guidance

Slip ratings are matched to location and gradient: P4 for standard ramps, P5 for steeper grades. Generic one-rating treatments often fail gradient-specific audits.

NDIS Home Modifications

Funded ramp modifications need documented slip resistance. Stellmann provides certificates written against your ramp’s gradient for the application.

National Construction Code (NCC/BCA)

Access ramps in commercial and public buildings carry slip-resistance requirements that affect certification.

Questions, answered

Wheelchair Ramp Coating FAQs

What P-rating does a wheelchair ramp need?

It depends on the gradient. Standard ramps are typically P4 and steeper ramps P5 under AS 4586 with HB 198 guidance. We confirm the rating from your ramp’s actual slope as part of your free product match, because that is what an audit will check.

Will the texture affect wheelchair wheels?

No. The finish is a fine micro-texture, not ridges or strips. Chairs track normally, walking frames and sticks do not catch, and the surface is easy to keep clean.

Can this be funded as an NDIS home modification?

Stellmann coatings are suitable for NDIS-funded ramp modifications, and we provide the slip-resistance documentation OTs and planners need for the application.

How fast can a home ramp be done?

The coating is applied in a few hours and needs up to 12 hours to cure. When the ramp is the only way in and out, we plan the work so the cure window causes the least disruption.

Does it work on metal ramps?

Yes. Concrete, metal and timber ramps are all treated, each with surface-appropriate preparation. See the metal surfaces guide for detail.

Does the coating change how a gloss tile looks?

On a gloss tile the sheen can change slightly toward satin; that is the only visible difference most customers notice.
