Non-Slip Tactiles: Securing Auckland’s Train Stations with Superior Safety, non-slip floor coating on platform.

Our distributor in New Zealand recently completed an impressive project at all train stations in Auckland, New Zealand. Partnering with Kiwi Rail, our coating has created non-slip tactiles at all platforms, increasing safety for passengers by eliminating slips and falls.

Kiwi Rail operates New Zealand’s primary rail network and plays a crucial role in the country’s transportation infrastructure. The company manages both freight and passenger rail services, ensuring efficient connectivity across the nation. Kiwi Rail’s dedication to safety and reliability supports economic growth and enhances daily life for New Zealanders.

The Safety Challenge

The tactile strips installed at the platforms failed to meet slip-resistance standards, causing numerous slips and injuries. Tactile strips are essential safety features on train station platforms and other public spaces. These raised, textured strips alert visually impaired passengers to the platform’s edge, helping them navigate safely and avoid accidents. Furthermore, these strips are typically bright yellow to maximize visibility for all commuters.

After numerous slips and falls, independent slip tests conform AS/NZ 4663-2013 found the tactiles did not meet safety standards. Therefore, the high safety risk at these busy stations called for an immediate solution. However, replacing the tactile strips was costly and disruptive. Therefore, Kiwi Rails looked into other solutions and Stellmann Non-Slip Clear PRO P5 presented a game-changing alternative.

After rigorous testing, our coating demonstrated outstanding performance. The P5 slip-rating was confirmed in multiple slip-tests after prolonged traffic. The results proved that applying Stellmann Non-Slip Clear PRO P5 would be a cost-effective choice, cutting costs by up to 10 times compared to full replacement of the tactiles. Therefore, our CSIRO-certified coating provided safety, durability, and long-term value.

The installations have been completed by certified installers. Over 5000m2 of tactile areas are the Auckland train stations have already had Stellmann Non-Slip applied. Passengers now move confidently across platforms, thanks to the enhanced slip resistance of the tactile strips.

Looking ahead, Kiwi Rail plans to extend this safety upgrade in 2026 to additional stations on the North Island. Stellmann Non-Slip remains committed to supporting New Zealand’s public transport safety with innovative and economical solutions.
