At Swinburne University of Technology’s Hawthorn campus, safety improvements were needed at the heritage-listed paved entry of the Old Administration Building. After researching several solutions, Stellmann Non-Slip Clear PRO was selected as the best solution to prevent slips and falls.

The AD building, constructed in 1908 as part of the original Eastern Suburbs Technical College, holds significant historical value. This later became the Swinburne University of Technology. After several near misses at the entrance to the AD building, a safe solution was urgently required. Traditional anti-slip treatments were not an option because they damage the substrate (etching), which is unacceptable for a heritage-listed surface. Furthermore, preserving the building’s original character was a top priority.

Application Process

The Stellmann Non-Slip Coating was applied over an area of approximately 40 m² by Dennis from DK Floors. Although the coating is easy to roll on, for this project a spray application method was used. Because the pavers vary in height and structure, this allows for a faster and easier application. Additional areas will be treated later in the year to ensure consistent safety across the property.
