The Star Brisbane has redefined the city’s skyline with its iconic Sky Deck, a stunning addition to Queensland’s vibrant urban landscape. The Sky Deck sours 100 meters above the Brisbane River. It is not only an architectural marvel but also a testament to modern innovation in safety and design.
This extraordinary space offers uninterrupted 360-degree views of the city and beyond. This allows visitors to immerse in a breathtaking experience. Yet, the design of the Sky Deck posed unique challenges, particularly in maintaining safety without compromising the aesthetic appeal.
Specifically, the glass flooring panels of the Sky Deck Bridge need to be clear to allow visitors to look straight down to the ground below. To meet this challenge, Stellmann Coatings played a pivotal role by introducing a custom designed non-slip glass solution tailored for the Sky Deck’s glass panels.
Glass floor panels are notoriously slippery in wet conditions. Furthermore, non-slip glass options by glass manufacturers often do not meet the required slip-ratings. On top of that, these panels can be expensive and often compromise on glass transparency. Stellmann Coatings offers a cost-efficient and CSIRO-certified non-slip solution for glass.
Our coating can be applied in combination with a custom-designed template. This allows for a wide range of design options. Multiplex and The Star selected a pattern with 10mm dots allowing up to 80% clear glass. Furthermore, our non-slip coating achieved a P4 slip-rating conform AS 4586-2013. The custom design pattern has several benefits:
The installation process required precision and expertise to align the coating’s dotted template with the Sky Deck’s design vision. Stellmann’s certified installation partner DBRS worked together with the template supplier. This resulted in a perfectly aligned dotted non-slip glass pattern without disrupting its optical clarity.
The final result was a flawless, durable surface that provides a P4 slip-rating, even in wet conditions. The coating not only met the required slip-rating standards but also preserved the sophisticated aesthetic of the Sky Deck.
The Sky Deck at The Star Brisbane is more than just an observation platform; it is a symbol of the city’s aspirations and architectural ingenuity. By combining form and function, the project showcases how thoughtful design and cutting-edge solutions like Stellmann Non-Slip can harmonize to create spaces that inspire and protect.
