If the searches keep landing you on tile etching and you've gotten a quote from a provider, this article is for you. Tile etching is an irreversible chemical treatment, and most people commit before they understand what they are getting into.
We see the appeal—tile etching is quick, way cheaper than re-tiling, and most of the time effective. However, it is only one of several ways to make floors non-slip without replacing them, and it comes with a considerable amount of fine print.

Tile etching (also called acid etching or micro-etching) is a chemical anti-slip treatment that uses an acid solution to create microscopic grooves and cracks in the tile glaze. The resulting micro-texture increases friction underfoot, particularly when the tiles are wet.
People use tile etching on glazed ceramic, porcelain, and terrazzo floors in areas with slip hazards, such as pool sides, stairs, bathrooms, and commercial kitchens. It became the default fix for slippery tiles in Australia because it is cheap and fast.

The etching solution usually contains hydrofluoric acid (HF) mixed with buffering agents like ammonium bifluoride and other compounds that make it safer to handle. This chemical attacks the silica component of the ceramic tile glaze, thinning out and roughening the glaze layer with microscopic grooves, cracks, and pores.
The grip comes from surface roughness. When etched tiles are wet, water doesn't form a continuous film - the micro-cracks channel and break up water so shoes or feet can grip the surface directly rather than slide over a layer of water.
Under the AS 4586 slip resistance standard, the Wet Pendulum Test measures the resulting traction and assigns a P-rating from P1 to P5. Acid etching can elevate slippery tiles to a P3-P5 rating, depending on acid concentration, dwell time, and the tile's surface composition.
An experienced applicator can manipulate these variables to influence the outcome, but hitting a specific P-rating isn't guaranteed.

Most etching jobs follow the same five steps:
Treatment usually takes a few hours, and people can walk on the surface right after the final rinse. A longer dwell time gives a deeper etch, and some providers skip the post-application slip test recommended for documentation.

Etching is often used wherever glazed ceramic or porcelain tiles meet water, oil, or grease, creating a slip risk. Common settings include:

On glazed tiles, etching can produce measurable P3-P5 outcomes under AS 4586. However, results are not guaranteed and depend on the applicator's skills.

These may not be a dealbreaker for everyone, but they are worth knowing:
Acid strips the glaze, causing loss of shine, discolouration, and a patchy matte finish — especially on dark or polished porcelain
Tiles vary in glaze, thickness, and porosity even within the same floor. Hence, the acid reaction isn't always uniform
Even when diluted, HF can penetrate the skin and cause deep-tissue damage. It requires a trained applicator with protective equipment and full site evacuation
Acid etching qualifies as chemical alteration, which voids coverage under all tile manufacturers' warranties. If etched tiles become defective, you'll bear the cost of replacement
Soap scum, body oils, dirt and cooking grease fill up the pores and cracks, so the tiles revert to being smooth and slippery in 6 - 12 months (well before the lifetime estimate). Meanwhile, etching providers only offer warranties for the treatment's lifetime, not performance loss.

Etching technicians have no mandatory accreditation in Australia, and most in-house slip tests aren't independently audited — outcomes depend on the etching provider

Evidently, etching is reasonable for glazed ceramic tiles in non-aesthetic areas, low-budget projects, or old tiles due for replacement. Outside these scenarios, the trade-offs are hard to justify.
