Acid etching alters the floor’s surface to create microscopic texture. Textured non-slip paints add a gritty finish. Grip tape provides a quick-fix, abrasive surface, and topical bonded coatings add a durable, textured layer over the floor.
Several types of anti-slip tile treatments can improve grip. But how long they retain performance depends on compatibility, foot traffic, and maintenance practices.
Don’t take manufacturers’ claims at face value. This article explains how to test anti-slip treatments, interpret the results, and understand the limitations before you buy.
The industry doesn’t rely on how anti-slip treatment feels underfoot. We prove it works by measuring how much it improves a floor’s slip resistance, moving it from one P-rating to a higher one.
Two main standards guide slip resistance compliance in Australia: AS 4586, which classifies new pedestrian surface materials, and AS 4663, which measures existing pedestrian surfaces. Both use the wet pendulum test to assess slip resistance.

The test uses a machine with a swinging arm fitted with a rubber slider. The tester wets the floor and releases the arm so that it touches the wet surface on every swing, measuring friction between the slider and the floor.
The result measures how high it swings after contact. Shorter swings indicate greater friction, while longer swings suggest low grip. We repeat the test five times and record the average as a Pendulum Test Value (PTV).
This value determines the floor’s P-rating, which we explore at length in our P4 vs P5 Explainer Guide.

Before paying for anti-slip treatment, ask the provider to show you independent slip-test results or an AS 4586 test report. These give you something concrete to assess beyond the marketing claims.
Some non-slip coatings for tiles have been tested under AS 4586 in the lab to establish their slip-resistance level. Ask for the test report and check that the rating meets your floor’s intended use.
For chemical etching and other treatments, an on-site slip test will confirm the grip achieved after application. On-site tests also help monitor a coating’s long-term performance.

Stellmann coatings have been independently tested and certified by CSIRO under AS 4586. They achieved P4 and P5 classifications with the shoe-testing slider (Slider 96) and P5 with the barefoot-testing slider (Slider 55).
We have replicated these results on existing floors, with professional application, on-site slip testing, and documented P-rating certificates across several installation projects.
For example, at Nando’s Camperdown, NSW, an independent wet pendulum test recorded an SRV of 59 (P5) after treatment.

Slip Test Australia also tested how well our non-slip coatings retain grip under accelerated wear conditions. This matters because a treatment’s initial slip rating doesn’t tell you how well it will perform as the floor wears.
The coating retained a P4 classification after 2,000 wear cycles, with a Slip Resistance Value (SRV) of 46.
No anti-slip treatment performs at original capacity forever. Foot traffic and other factors gradually wear off the texture. We recommend annual slip-resistance testing to monitor your floors and catch when maintenance or reapplication is needed.
Mop-and-shine products leave wax or polymer films, while some disinfectants and harsh cleaners leave slippery residues that reduce friction. Stick to pH-neutral, non-abrasive cleaners recommended by your provider.
Flooring materials respond differently to treatments. For instance, ceramic tiles bond better with anti-slip coatings than porcelain tiles. Acid etching also works better on marble than on granite. Dirt, damage and poor preparation can also affect the final result.

The treatment must suit your floor material, finish, and usage conditions. A good provider assesses these factors before recommending an anti-slip treatment method and target P-rating.
Professional service covers more than rolling on a coating. Stellmann’s certified installers provide the right preparation and application for your floor type. Acid etching also requires expertise to achieve better results safely.
A professional treatment should come with verifiable slip-test results, not just a provider’s claims. Results verified by independent testing providers are more defensible than those based solely on in-house testing.
Coatings, etched floors, and even grip tape need the right cleaning products and ongoing care. A good treatment provider should offer a maintenance guide with clear, easy-to-follow cleaning instructions.
Slip safety through non-slip floor solutions is a process, not a one-off fix. Performance depends on getting the right treatment, proper application, and ongoing maintenance.
Quality anti-slip coatings come with tested and verified slip-resistance ratings, but those results aren’t permanent. You’ll still need periodic slip testing to monitor grip over time.

They work when matched to the floor, applied correctly, and maintained. Independent slip testing can verify any improvements in slip resistance. However, treatments aren’t permanent, and the wrong cleaning products can reduce grip.
Anti-slip treatment is a broad term for processes that improve floor traction, including chemical etching, mechanical abrasion and coatings. Non-slip coatings are treatments applied over floors to form a bonded, textured layer.
The wet pendulum test measures slip resistance on wet surfaces, so a treatment with a wet pendulum rating will work on wet surfaces. However, grease requires testing under oil-contaminated conditions and a proper cleaning regime. No anti-slip treatment replaces proper floor maintenance.
Some are. AS 4586 classifies new pedestrian surface materials, while AS 4663 measures the slip resistance of existing floors. Ask for an independent test report, such as one from CSIRO, to verify the treatment’s performance rather than relying on marketing claims.
It depends on the treatment, surface, traffic and maintenance. Periodic on-site slip testing to AS 4663 helps confirm that floors still pass. Correct cleaning preserves the rating far longer than most people expect.
A quality clear coating is near-invisible, with subtle texture underfoot. However, chemical etching can change the gloss of some surfaces. Ask for a trial patch if appearance matters.
